Roof leakage is not always caused by the failure of waterproofing materials. Incorrect fastener selection, unsuitable installation positions, and excessive hammering can also create paths for water penetration. Although corrugated roofing nails and waterproof cap nails can both be used in roofing projects, their structures, load distribution, and suitable applications are different.

Correct installation does not simply mean driving a nail as tightly as possible. The real objective is to provide sufficient pull-out resistance without damaging the corrugated roofing sheet, waterproof membrane, or sealing washer.

I. What Is the Difference Between Corrugated Roofing Nails and Waterproof Cap Nails?

Corrugated roofing nails usually have large heads and may be supplied with metal washers or rubber sealing washers. They are commonly used to secure corrugated roofing sheets, roof tiles, and other roofing materials. Some products use ring or twisted shanks to improve pull-out resistance in timber purlins.

Waterproof cap nails have a large metal or plastic cap attached to the nail head. They are primarily used to secure roofing felt, waterproof membranes, insulation boards, and moisture barriers. The enlarged cap distributes pressure across a wider area and reduces the risk of thin materials being torn by an ordinary nail head.

II. What Preparations Are Required Before Installation?

1. Inspect the Roof Substrate

Before installation, confirm that the purlins, timber boards, or structural panels are level, dry, and capable of providing sufficient nail-holding strength. Rotten, cracked, or excessively thin substrates cannot provide reliable pull-out resistance.

The nail must enter an effective load-bearing substrate. It should not simply pass through the roofing sheet or waterproof membrane without engaging the purlin or structural decking underneath.

2. Select the Correct Corrosion Protection

Roofing fasteners are exposed to rain, moisture, and temperature changes for long periods. Galvanized, hot-dip galvanized, or stainless-steel fasteners should be selected according to the environmental corrosion level. Ordinary bright steel nails intended for indoor use are unsuitable for long-term outdoor exposure.

Some metal roofing systems may require installation in the valley, flat section, or a designated fastening zone.

Installers should not select the crest or valley based only on general experience. The roofing panel manufacturer’s installation drawings should take priority.

Fastener spacing should also reflect panel width, overlap length, roof-edge zones, and local wind loads. Eaves, corners, and perimeter areas generally experience higher wind uplift and may require closer fastener spacing.

III. Correct Installation of Corrugated Roofing Nails

1. Position the Roofing Sheets Before Fastening

Corrugated roofing sheets should be installed with the correct overlap and oriented according to the direction of drainage. Nail positions must align with the purlins or other load-bearing members below. Chalk lines or other markings can help prevent fasteners from missing the substrate.

If the roofing material is brittle or the manufacturer requires pre-drilling, use a suitable drill bit to prepare the hole. The hole may need sufficient clearance for thermal expansion and contraction, but it must not be so large that the nail head or washer can no longer cover it properly.

2. Keep the Nail Properly Aligned

Corrugated roofing nails should enter the substrate straight and consistently. An angled nail places excessive pressure on one side of the sealing washer while leaving a gap on the other side. This can create a potential leakage path.

Begin hammering with controlled force. Once the nail is correctly aligned, continue driving it gradually. Thin metal sheets and plastic roofing materials should not be subjected to a single heavy impact.

3. Control Washer Compression

A corrugated roofing nail with a rubber washer does not become more waterproof simply because it is driven more tightly.

The washer should make uniform contact with the roofing sheet and form a continuous seal. It should not be compressed until it visibly bulges, cracks, or deforms.

If the nail is too loose, water may travel along the shank. If it is driven too tightly, the washer may be damaged, the panel may become dented, and normal thermal movement may be restricted.

IV. Correct Installation of Waterproof Cap Nails

1. Identify Suitable Installation Areas

Waterproof cap nails are suitable for securing roofing felt, waterproof underlayment, insulation boards, moisture barriers, and other thin covering materials. The large cap distributes the load over a wider area, reducing the risk of the material being lifted by wind or pierced by a small nail head.

However, cap nails are generally used for mechanically fixed underlayers or waterproofing components that will later be covered. Whether they may penetrate a final exposed waterproof layer depends on the approved system design. Installers should not add nail holes to a finished waterproof surface without confirmation.

2. Keep the Cap Flat Against the Surface

During installation, the cap should lie flat against the membrane. It must not tilt, curl upward, or cut into the material.

Hammering force should be sufficient to hold the cap firmly against the surface but should not create a deep depression in the membrane. Fasteners with bent, cracked, or sharp-edged caps should be replaced.

3. Install Within Overlap or Designated Fastening Zones

Waterproof membranes are generally installed with a specified overlap. Cap nails should be positioned within the areas shown in the product instructions or construction details. Whenever possible, the next overlapping layer should cover the fastening points.

After mechanical fastening, complete the overlap, bonding, or sealing process according to the waterproofing system requirements.

Angled nails, loose fasteners, and damaged washers should be removed and replaced at suitable positions. The original holes should be repaired according to the waterproofing system requirements.

Once the roof is in service, eaves, overlaps, corners, and windward areas should be inspected periodically. Corroded nail heads, aged washers, and loose roofing panels should be repaired promptly.

Corrugated roofing nails are mainly used to secure corrugated roofing materials, while waterproof cap nails are more suitable for holding roofing felt, waterproof membranes, and insulation boards.

Both fasteners can improve roof stability, but neither can replace a complete waterproofing design. Scientific installation must consider roofing material, substrate structure, fastening position, spacing, corrosion resistance, and sealing requirements.

Correct product selection, straight installation, controlled pressure, and careful final inspection are essential for reducing the risks of fastener-hole leakage and loose roofing materials.
